Taieri Fit and Fun Group

Individual assessment with experienced Cardiac Nurses and supervised group exercise session, home-based exercise programme and support.


Te Hiku Hauora - Kaitaia - Far North
Phase II. Manaaki Manawa. A Kaupapa Maori based Cardiac Rehabilitation in the Far North District. A 12-week+ rehabilitation program supporting people to regain their potential following a heart event. Also includes a 6-week education programme (Phase II) for all cardiac patients and their family. Free Cardiac Classes include: Risk Factors, Medications, Heart Health, Nutrition, Stress Management, and Exercise. Group education and individual discussion, weekly.

The ExerScience Clinic
The first medically-focused exercise clinic of its kind in New Zealand established to provide prescribed exercise programmes. The clinic offers education sessions, nutritional support as well as integration in to a neighbouring gym where appropriate. Exercise sessions are fully supervised. Free 30 minute clinic intro offered to discuss services. Ongoing costs vary. Phase II & III.



The Larks
An exercise and cardiac support group which meets every Wednesday morning at Unipol gym. It includes low impact aerobics, weights and stretching, and optional cuppa afterwards at the café. Regular social events as well. Everyone is welcome and it is $4.00 per session, pay as you go. Phase lll.



The Otago Phoenix Club
The club is a registered charity. The purposes of the Club are: a) To support cardiac rehabilitation for people affected by cardiovascular disease and/or a cardiac event in their return to active life and the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle, and particularly through supervised exercise in a supportive environment (Phase 3 Cardiac Rehabilitation provided since 1968). b) To support cardiac education and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle using evidence-based guidelines. c) To support cardiac-related research particularly relating to the management and support of people who have experienced a cardiac event and to encourage participation in this research by invitation and consent. d) To support other organizations sharing similar purposes, including other cardiac rehabilitation groups in Dunedin and the Otago Branch of Heart Foundation New Zealand. The club provides for its members and their support person: • Monday and Thursday evenings, cardiac exercise and table tennis sessions between 7 and 8 pm, at the Fraser Centre lifestyle gym, Dunedin. These sessions are managed and supervised by physiotherapists. • Annual CPR training. • Peer group support. • Social outings. Membership • Membership by application is open to those who have completed a rehabilitation programme following a heart event. • Have a doctor’s referral that indicates the prospective member is able to participate in the exercise programme being offered. • The 2020 annual membership subscription is $30.00. The gym exercise sessions have a charge of $1.00 per attendance.

Timaru Hospital
Free 6-week education and exercise programme for all cardiac patients, on Mondays. Includes individual discussion, stress management, home exercise programme, diet and medication. Phase II.



Waikato Hospital
Phase II. Education programme for all cardiac patients. Group education. Topics include heart disease, risk factors and treatment, physical activity, medication, cholesterol and nutrition, stress management. Group exercise options. Phase II. Education programme for all cardiac patients. 5 week programme including supervised group exercise, individual discussion, spouse counselling, stress management, family support, CPR, dietitian and pharmacist talks.

Phase II. A group based education programme for people with coronary artery disease. A free, flexible, 4 week cyclical programme including understanding coronary artery disease and the medications used, risk factor management with nutrition, physical activity, CPR, advance care planning information as well as stress and anxiety management. The programme is offered during the day and some evenings on a Tuesday at North Shore Hospital in the Whenua Pupuke Building.
